"Is this baby thing what has you so upset?”

Vidcund didn’t answer verbally but pulled his shirt up to reveal his marred abdomen.

Circe softly ran her fingers over the raised pink scar tissue. Vidcund’s abdominal muscles jumped at the surprise of her gentle touch.

“You mean…” she stammered. “… Not you too?”

Vidcund nodded silently, unable to take his eyes off of her bronzed skin and auburn hair in the light of the sunrise. He wanted desperately for her to comfort him. He wanted to cry on her shoulder, smell the sweetness of her hair and the smoothness of her cheek against his.

He remained impassive rather than expose his weakness to her.

“How did this happen.” She asked her hand still on his midriff.

“I thought you didn’t want to know.”

“I lied. I really want to know,” she pleaded. “I have to know.”

“We were abducted by aliens.”

Circe laughed heartily until she noticed Vidcund’s stoic expression.

“You are serious, aren’t you?” she asked earnestly.

“Do you have a better explanation?”

“No, not really,” she lamented.

“Pascal was taken about nine months ago and I was taken last night.”

She was dumbfounded. She searched for some words to comfort him but the whole situation seemed absurd.

“Maybe it’s not a 100% certainty,” she suggested hopefully. “Like how a woman does not necessarily become pregnant every time she has sex. Maybe a man does not become impregnated every time he is abducted.” She realized how ludicrous it sounded as soon as the words left her mouth.

“I’m sorry,” she apologized.  She had absolutely no idea how to ease his mind. She looked at her watch, hoping for an excuse to escape this uncomfortable silence. “I have to go. I don’t know how I am going to explain to Loki where I have been all this time.”

She put her arms around her Vidcund in a friendly and sympathetic hug.

Vidcund found little solace in her all too brief show of affection.

“Call me on my cell if you want to, okay?”

“Sure. Thanks,” He replied.

Circe Beaker got into her car and drove off without looking back, leaving a distraught and depressed Vidcund Curious standing in the driveway, bathed in the morning sunlight.
