Chapter 4: Sucked in

We all looked at each other for confirmation that the others had heard the same sound.
"Where’s Vidcund?" I asked.
Nervous and Lazlo looked at me blankly as I struggled.
"Hurry up!" I yelled. "Get up there before they get him!"
Without needing further encouragement, Nervous and Lazlo were bounding up the stairs to the roof where we had built a sort of platform that went several stories up. The platform made it easier for using a telescope as it cut down on the interference of the city lights.
I finally released myself from the sofa and having forgotten all personal discomfort, went as quickly behind them as I could. I knew full well that no matter how fast either of them ran, they would not be able to help him. Everything would happen just too quickly.
By the time I reached the roof, Lazlo and Nervous were standing at the top of the platform, looking to the sky. Lazlo even chanced a few peeks through the telescope. There was no sign that Vidcund had even been there. Nervous plucked at Lazlo’s sleeve and urged him to come back down to the roof. Lazlo hesitantly left the telescope behind and they both met me down on the roof.
“He’s gone,” said Nervous as he reached the bottom of the stairs. He looked, appropriately, nervous.
“It was just like you said, Pascal. If Vic hadn’t held on to the rail so long, we wouldn’t have seen what happened to him,” panted Lazlo.
I, too, remembered hanging onto the rail.
Lazlo’s face was flushed and his hands were shaking. I couldn’t tell if it was fear or excitement that had aroused him. Had he been in my place, I am certain it would have been fear.
“When we got out here he was standing at the platform, staring up into this bright light, and then some sort of tractor beam, just like in Star Trek, pulled him up. He held on as long as he could.”Nervous nodded anxiously as Lazlo expounded on what they had seen.
“Then, after it sucked him up, the bright light went out and we could see the ship. It was exactly like you described, big brother. It kinda hung there in the air for a second and then disappeared. It was a saucer with yellow and red circular markings.” Lazlo thought for a second and added, “and there were lots of lights, all around the thing.”
“Green flashing lights,” added Nervous helpfully, “all going around in a circle.”
“And a domed top,” I finished, knowingly.
Lazlo looked at Nervous and Nervous looked to me. Lazlo got a confused look on his face.
“It kinda looked like a bad movie prop,” Lazlo mentioned quizzically.
There was a brief silence while we all contemplated the apparently shoddy workmanship of the alien craft.
I sighed anxiously.
“I assure you it was no prop,” I informed them.
“Well, what now?” asked Lazlo. “I mean, will they bring him back?”
